What is a hernia?

A hernia is a weakness in the wall of the abdomen. Just like a tire where the wall has been thinned out it results in a bulge. On the right you will see a diagram. Think about the analogy of a tubeless tire which requires a patch. Rather than repairing it from the "outside", looking from the "inside" allows placement of a large patch and being able to drive out on this same tire. This same principle applies with hernia repair. The source of the problem can be dealt identifying where it starts and the repair can be tailored to that patient. Sometimes there can be more than one type of a hernia in the same patient and it is only with the laparoscopic approach that those can be detected and repaired.

What is Laparoscopic Hernia Repair?

Laparoscopic hernia repair is a surgery done through small incision using special optical equipment that allows work in the small spaces.
Because of the optics, the tissue is seen larger and identification of changes in the tissue is easier.
Think about the analogy of a tubeless tire which has a puncture. Rather than repairing it from the "outside", looking from the "inside" allows placement of a large patch and in fact driving out on this same tire. This same principle applies with hernia repair. The source of the problem can be dealt with where it starts and the repaired can be tailored to the patient. Sometimes there is more than one type of a hernia in the same patient and it is only with the laparoscopic approach that it can be detected and repaired.

Does my insurance cover the repair?

All insurances without exception cover hernia repair. All of course subjected to what is called policy restrictions, pre-existing conditions and the deductibles that are imposed by the carriers.
For the patients who do not have insurances we provide, after exam and evaluation a cash price.
