Memorial Hernia Center

Your Hernia

A Hernia is a result of a weakness in the body’s wall. Usually it develops gradually.
Initially there might be pain as the only manifestation and later on there might appear a “bulge”. Over time, if left untreated, it will get larger. As the size increases some organs from inside the abdominal cavity might move into the hernia and become a part of it. Occasionally it will appear suddenly as a result of a strenuous physical activity. In fact it was there all along, quiet, and that activity has made its presence noticeable.

Every year in the United States there are about 1,000,000 surgeries for hernias of the abdomen and out of those 750,000 surgeries are for hernias of the groin area (groin hernia). World wide about twenty million hernias are repaired each year. Groin hernias are more common in male patients and overall are more frequent on the right side than on the left. Until the 1990 repair of hernias was done in the "traditional open incision" way. This approach was associated with a longer recovery and a higher recurrence rate.

The evolution of Laparoscopic Hernia Repair since the 1990's has made a great difference for our patients. Out patient surgery, very short recovery and recuperation as well as extremely low recurrence rate has made this approach very "patient friendly".

Here at the Memorial Hernia Center experience, quality, clear communication as well as friendly staff are the mainstay of our reputation.
